          4. (U) TITLE., PERSONNEL:    SJA ASSISTANCE, TAX PREPARATION

          5. (U) OBSERVATION- Deploying soldiers are expected to be      away
          from home through tax season.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION-. Although deployed, soldiers are still
          expected to file their taxes in a timely manner. Those soldiers
          who are filing joint returns, or have made arrangements to have
          someone else receive their tax in-Formation can give a special
          power of attorney to that person to allow that person to file
          their taxes for them. The power of attorney needs to specify
          the tax year in question and grant the ability to cash and
          deposit any refund.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Soldiers need to plan all their personal
          affairs, including tax affairs.

          B. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Have the soldi    ers execute t he tax
          special power a+ attorney and make arrangements +or others to
          receive tax information at home station. At Fort Riley, these
          functions were accomplished at the FAC, through coordination
          between Legal Assistance and Finance.
