        4. (U) TITLE: PERSONNEL: FAMILY SUPPORT DIVISION UPDATES

        5. (U) OBSERVATION: Each time the broadcast media releases
        reports of fighting Or Casualties, inquiries to the family
        assistance center in person or by telephone increase,
        significantly. The FAC becomes the "Focal" point +or families;
        in most cases, the parents of single soldiers thin@@. of Fort
        Riley is the only "life-line" to their soldiers.

        6. (U) DISCUSSION: When CNN reports fighting, the telephone
        demand increases to 200 calls per hour. Telephone inquiries
        originate from all across the U.S. In every case information
        available in the FAC is "old". "Current" news reports arrive 2
        days after the initial announcement is aired.

        7. (U) LESSON LEARNED-

           a. Fort R.iley: Consider the FAC as a primary resource -For
        families; provide it with updated information daily.

          .b. DPCA: Designate a F'OC for acquiring -Rnd assembling
        information. Establish sources in the Garrison Operation Center,
        PAO, the Command Group, and brigade contact teams. Also
        consider AG Enlisted Strength Managment(POC +or E-.Mail), IG,
        SJA, and Chaplains as possible information sources.
