--- CZECH REPUBLIC/GULF WAR - CHEMICAL TROOPS
1. OFFICE HAS RECEIVED OFFICIAL REPORT FROM CZECH MINISTRY OF
DEFENCE, DEPARTHENT OF PRESS INFORNATION AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS, WHICH
REFERS TO THE TASKS OF THEIR CHEMICAL DEFENCE TROOPS DURING THE
GULF WAR. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE REPORT REFERS TO THE DETECTION OF
A NERVE GAS ON THE 17TH OF JAN 1992.
THE REPOXT .STATES FROM 0400 HOURS ON 17 JAN 91, VERY LOW LEVELS
OF A NERVE GAS (REF A INDICATED SARIN ) WERE DETECTED IN THE AREA
OF THE 4TH AND 20TH BRIGADES OF THB SAUDI ARABIAN ARMY AND ALSO IN
KING KHALID MILITARY CITY (?). THE CZECH INDICATE THAT THE GAS
DETECTED WAS PROBABLY THE RESULT OF ALLIED AIR ATTACKS ON
UNSPECIFIED lRAQI CHEMICAL DEPOTS. FURTHER TESS TWO HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL DETECTION WERE NEGATIVE.
3. REPORT CONTINUES WITH STATENENTS OF PROFESSIONALISM AND
EXPERIENCE OF THOSE TROOPS AND FURTHER REMARKS THAT A COMPLETE
MEDICAL EXAMINATION OF 18 TROOPS WHO WER~ DEPLOYED TO GULF AND,
EXPERIENCED REACTIONS SIMILAR TO SOME US SOLDIERS, REVEALED NO

P~GE TWO WODR9324 UNCLA58~FIED
SIGNS OF ANY PROBLEMS RELATED TO A NERVE GAS OR ANOTHER CHEMICAL
AGENT. CZECH POSITION IS THAT PROBLEMS WITH THESE INDIVIDUALS ARE
PROBABLY RELATED TO QUOTE COMMON UNQUOTE COMPLAINTS CAUSED BY A
LONG STAY ABROAD.
4. CONMENT: THE ISSUE OF AN OFFICIAL REPORT BY THE MOD IS
SOMEWHAT OF A SURPRISE AND IS PROBABLY IS IN RESPONSE TO A US
INVESTIGATION COMMITTEE WHICH VISITED PRAGUE TO REVIEW CZECH
PERSONEL AND DOCUMENTS RELATED TO THE MATTER. VARIOUS CONMITTEE
MEMBERS WERE QUOTED IN CZECH PAPERS INDICATING THEY WERE NOT SURE
HoW MUCH EMPHASIS COULD BE PLACED ON A CZECH ANALYSIS. THIS
CERTAINLY IRKED THE CZECH MILITARY WHICH RELEASED MOST OFFICIAL
RECORDS TO THE US MILITARY AND HAVE NOTIFIED OTHER COUNTRIES BY
MEANS OF THIS REPORT OF THEIR ANALYSIS AND VIEWS ON THE MATTER.
