SUBJECT: 1701AREFW(P) SUSPECTED FOODBORNE ILLNESS

MEMO FOR THE RECORD 25 Jan 91

SUBJECT: Suspected Foodborne Illness, 1701 PAREFW
          TO: Brig Gen Caruana

          1. As of 0800 on 25 Jan 91, 648 cases of gastroenteritis were
reported by the hospital supporting the 1701 PAREFW. There were
only 16 new patients in the past 24 hours. The total count
increased more than l6 because a review of records revealed
additional cases. Fifty-four patients were admitted (plus 1 for
the day). Only 3 remain in the hospital. The number of DNIFs
increased from 7 to 8. This increase is also the result of the
records review. The eighth DNIF occurred on 23 Jan 91.

          2. Preliminary stool culture results were negative. A host
nation laboratory was use, so definitive results are not expected
          until Saturday.
