POINT PAPER ON SERVICE REQUIREMENTS FOR DIAZEPAM AUTOINJECTORS IN SUPPORT OF DESERT SHIELD PURPOSE To outline the requirements identified by the Services for diazepam autoinjectors in support of Desert Shield. BACKGROUND - On 14 Aug 90, CENTAF/SG decided to request production of diazepam autoinjectors (under the Army IND) for treatment of nerve agent casualties (should they occur) in its AOR (see point paper this date). - The CENTAF/SG decision led to queries to the other Services concerning any requirement they might have for the item. - As of 0830, 16 Aug 90 the following requirements have been identified to the Army project officer: CENTAF 30,000 units USN/USMC 75,000 units (increased from 45,000 units) US Army 85,000 units (83,000 + 4 per combat lifesaver/medic) Total 190,000 units (increased from 158,000 units as of 15 Aug) - Army issuing commercially available pre-filled syringes to combat lifesavers now once autoinjectors are available plan to issue 1 autoinjector per soldier (comparable to CENTAF plans).
