McManus Airfield Manager, King Khalid Military City, 10 March 1991 831st Air Base Operability Sq George AFB CA S: Captain, my first question is, when did you first come over to KKMC? On your way over here, you must have had an idea of the type of mission you would be performing. Can you explain that to us? M: Yes. I arrived on 7 January 1991 at about 1700. I arrived after an 8-hour trip from King Fahd Airport. This was a very short-notice assignment. I was given a one-hour preparation before I was in the truck and on my way up here. My mission was given to me by Colonel Sharp of the 354th Wing. It was simply to create or to make the most offensive capability at KKMC that we can with an A-10 FOL [forward operating location] in mind. Then, when I got here, there were a few objectives that had to be met: first, to assess the airport and what it was capable of; and, secondly, moving the right kinds of eguipment around and building space and allocating real estate to the various organizations, creating a flow to get things moving. We had a Tactical Air Command and a Military Airlift Command operation in here at the time. [(b)(1)sec 3.4(b)(6)]
