PROBLEM: Inconsistent climate model output over time

• Model changes in NMC's Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS)
• Apparent jumps in climate variables caused
• RESULT: Real climate changes difficult to reliably detect

SOLUTION: Use a frozen analysis/forecast system

• Historical: 1958 - date (possibly back to 1946)
• Continue into future as Climate Data Assimilation System (CDAS)
• 40 years of Reanalysis over next 2-3 years
