Project Summary

Title: VA National Survey of Persian Gulf Veterans - Phase III
Synopsis: This is phase three of the VA survey study (VA 2) which uses computer records of troop unit locations in order to determine the prevalence of symptoms in veterans that did and did not serve in the Gulf War.
Overall Project Objective: To estimate prevalence of various symptoms and other health outcomes for Persian Gulf War veterans.
Status/Results to Date: Phase III is in process.

Specific Aims: To estimate and compare prevalence of various symptoms, medical conditions, and unexplained illnesses in Persian Gulf war veterans and those of non-Persian Gulf veterans.
Methodology: A population-based health survey. Several studies are currently underway that investigate the incidence, prevalence, and nature of illnesses in Gulf War veterans. The National Health Survey of Persian Gulf Veterans and Their Family Members is conducted in three phases. In this Phase III, 1,000 veteran respondents and their family members from each group will be invited to participate in a comprehensive physical examination under a uniform comprehensive clinical examination protocol at a VA medical facility. Phase III data collection was complete in August.
