Project Summary

Title: Deployment Health Center
Synopsis: This project involves the establishment of a Deployment Health Center (at the Naval Health Research Center in California) for conducting epidemiological research relevant to military personnel.
Overall Project Objective: Provide infrastructure support for aggregation of militarily relevant base-line data and on-going epidemiological research for safe-guarding the health of military personnel.
Status/Results to Date: A professional team has been employed, academic collaborations established, and access to critical databases secured. Complex epidemiological analyses are ongoing. Hallmark projects established at the Center include the Millennium Cohort Study(DoD-143), the DoD Birth Defects Registry, and the Recruit Assessment program (DoD-98). Other research projects currently in the Center's portfolio include: a study on the hospitalization experience of those deployed to the Gulf War, Southwest Asia after the Gulf War, and Bosnia; a study on the postwar hospitalization experience of Gulf War veterans exposed to oil well fire smoke; studies on the relationship between anthrax vaccine and morbidity (DoD-99), including reproductive morbidity; surveillance for neoplasms of infancy in military children; a pilot study of the Recruit Assessment Program in Marines (DoD-98); a survey study on use of complementary and alternative medicine; an evaluation of the association between Gulf War Registry participation and news events; a randomized clinical trial to assess combination treatment with pyridostigmine, DEET, and permethrin (DoD-124); a survey study on immunization knowledge and attitudes; and multiple respiratory disease research projects.
