Project Summary

Title: Millennium Cohort Study
Synopsis: This ongoing study (Millennium Cohort Study) will use periodic surveys to track changes in the health of a large group of US service members and veterans over time, in order to determine the health impact of deployments and other aspects of military service
Overall Project Objective: Determine how the health of US military service members and veterans changes over time, and determine the health impact of military deployments upon the adjusted incidence of chronic disease. This project is a joint DoD/VA study in collaboration with the Seattle VA Medical Center.
Status/Results to Date: Data collection is still in progress for the initial enrollment of the 2001 Cohort. Over 30,000 participants have been enrolled, as of November 2001.
Project:DOD-143
Agency:Department Of Defense
Location:Naval Health Research Center
P.I. Name:Margaret A.K. Ryan, M.D., LCDR
Research Type:Epidemiology
Research Focus:Symptoms & General Health
Focus Category:General Health & Physical Symptoms
Status:Ongoing
Study Start Date:
Estimated Completion Date:
Specific Aims: Compare the adjusted change in health within the cohort groups by Short Form-36 Questions/Veterans (SF-36V) scores; to compare the change in health within cohort groups by Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) score diagnostics; and serve as the foundation for a portfolio of future studies of the impact of military service, including anthrax vaccination, on the health of members of the armed forces.
Methodology: The cohort will consist of a probability-based, cross-sectional sample of 100,000 military personnel (in service as of October 2000), who will be followed prospectively by postal and Internet surveys every 3 years over a 21-year period. The 100,000 persons will be comprised of 70,000 veterans who have not been deployed to Southwest Asia, Bosnia, or Kosovo since August 1997, and 30,000 veterans who have been deployed to these conflicts. In October 2004 and October 2007, 20,000 new military personnel will be added to the cohort. The total of 140,000 veterans will be followed until the year 2022. The initial survey instrument will contain questions on demographic characteristics, self-reported medical conditions and symptoms, health behaviors, and it will use validated instruments to capture self-assessed physical and mental well-being (SF-36V), mental health diagnoses (PHQ), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PCL-17). Survey data will be linked to numerous deployment, occupational, vaccine, and healthcare utilization data.
