Wind Behavior in Eastern Saudi Arabia
1. The results of the co~puter si~nulations are highly dependent
on wind direction. Wind direction in eastern Saudi Arabia varies
depending on the time of year. Figure B-i shows windrose plots
for all months of the year. The plots show that wind direction is
generally north-northwest. However, for some months the wind does
not come from this direction. For example, for the months of
October through December, the wind comes from the northwest only
43 percent of the time. For the months of January through March,
the wind comes from the northwest 46 percent of the time and from
the southeast 10 percent of the time. On the other hand, wind
direction is from the north-northwest 63 percent of the time
during July through September. Thus, for six months of the year,
October through March, wind direction is less predictable. During
these months, chemical clouds could travel in nearly any
direction.
2. Figure B-2 shows wind direction as a function of time of day
for each day of December 1989. The data is provided simply as
another piece of evidence that wind direction is variable for
certain times of the year. The data also show that wind direction
changes several times during the day.
