Subj :   RETURN OF EXCl~ANGED t~17A2 GAS [ASi~S FRO~ SWA

1.    During August, 1990, MCLB, Al~any set up exchange of M17A2
masks for 1st and 7th ~EB's.   Other forces were either tested or
i~sued new masks prior to deploynent.

2.    Total of 21,477 masks were provided  (8000 to 1st t~EB and
13,477 to 7th {`EB).   To date exchange to 1st tiEB has been
completed.    All 8000 have been returned to PiCLB `5 ano either
returned to stock or sent to rebuild at Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

3.    Of 13,477 issued to 7th MEB 8,138 have still not been
returned.

4.    On 19 November 1990, ILSD sent a follow up message to I MEF
requesting expeditious return of these masks.     MCLB's need returns
to test and re-issue or forward to rebuild.     This process is a
major part of our reconstitution effort.

5.    On 21 Nobember 1990, CG I tiEF tasked 1st FSSG with locating
and returning the remaining 8,138.

6.    On 11 December 1990 COMtiAKCORLOGBASES Again requested I MEF
assistance in locating and returning masks.

7.    On 6 January 1991, CG I MEF again tasked 1st FSSG and 1st
~iARDIV with finding and returning the masks,   also directed 1st
FSSG to investigate as necessary.

8.    Informal communication between CWO3 Hartzell ILSD MCLB ALB
and CWO3 James,   I MEF 0-3/NBC has indicated that efforts were
being made to locate the masks and return them.     CWO3 James felt
that exchanges had been made but all old masks had not yet been
consolidated for return.

9.    On 25 January 1991, ILSD provided status of all issues o
!i17A2 gas masks to S\Q~ for sustaInment.   ~iessage was to 1st FSSG,
info ALCON.    Also requested update on return of 8,138.

S U~i~~ARY

ihe return of these masks wouLd greatly improve our asset posture.
Of ever. greater concern is the possibility that some of these
masks may stIll be in the hands of tiarines.
