        to move combat vehicles and equipment from the port to the TAA in a more
        expeditious manner. BO BIAckwell described war that night as "Hours and
        days of boredom filled with moments of sheer terror".
            Over the next week the Division Rnd the Divarty tecan to build combat
        power. The Division laid the groundwork for the Spearhead range complex
        which grew to include small arms ranges, a tank direct fire range, and an
        artillery impact area. Later, Divarty units would exercise meteorological
        and radar systems in Support of the battalions as they fired DLtal Purpose
        Improved Conventional Munitions (DPICM), Copperhead tnd high explosive
        (HE) munitions. The Spearhead Range complex was located outside of the
        TAA to the east.

            On the 14th of January 2 Brigades of the Is t Cavalry division were
        moved into positions in the vicinity of Ha+ar Al Batin to counter any
        possible enemy threat to KKMC. The 101st Air Assault and the Ist Infantry
        Division also adjusted their -Forces accordingly.
            On the 16th of January, the HHB main body arrived in the TAA. T@-e
        16th marked the end of Phase I (Movement to the TAA) for the Divarty. On
        D-Day, effective 0200 hours on the 17th of January, the United States was
        officially in a state of war. Actions within the TAA turned to training
        and sLLstainment. The air war was to continue for 38 days prior to the
        launch of the ground offensive.
           Over the next three weeks the Divarty$4!conducted t@aining and field
        operations. The meteorological and survey sections provided support to
        the battalions as necessary and always supported live -Fire exercises.
        Battalions, and the separate batteries trained on movement techniques and
        practiced hasty occupations and displacements. HHP and P/3'17 conducted
        small arms training primarily at the range set up by the !ST Brigade.
e battalions began live fire exercises at the Spearhead Range complex.
           Logistical issues were identified and worked to resolution. The
        intelligence system was in synch with the Division and updates were
        briefed nightly at the 1900 hour Divarty staff call. The operations and
        plans sections tracked the Division FRAGOs and kep'L abreast of current and
        future operations and plans.
           On about 7 February, discussion began in earne-@t ibt@ut ground war
        timing and the VII Corps movement from the TAAs tc?    PAAS. A date 4or 6
        Day had not been announced, however the +ollowina t-me,;ne was provided by
        the Division B-3 Plans and Exercises (PLEX) cell.
                On 6-7 the 2 ACR and the I AD would t:egir,         west towa-d

        finally turn north into desert and occupy their assigned positions in FAA
